Treating your home and yard for pests doesn't mean you have to put your family and pets at risk. Unfortunately, common chemical pesticides can threaten the health of your family, children, and pets.


Chemical pesticides used in controlling weeds, insects, etc., are toxic. They have been created to kill pests and are mostly broad-spectrum biocides. Of those same pesticides, 17 are detected in groundwater, 23 have the ability to leach into drinking water sources, 24 are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms vital to our ecosystem, 11 are toxic to bees, and 16 are toxic to birds.


These pesticides & poisons are absorbed through the skin, by the mouth, or by breathing sprays, dust, or vapors. You or your children can be poisoned if you apply or are present during the application of the chemical. Also if you touch contaminated grass, shoes, clothing, lawn furniture, etc., or put contaminated objects (toys, golf tees, blades of grass, etc.) or fingers in the mouth.


Babies, the elderly, and immune-compromised have the highest risk of health effects from exposure to pesticides. Chemical pesticides can be exposed to young children quite easily because they play or crawl on grass or floors where pesticide powders and granules normally settle. Contaminated hands and toys can easily make it into the child's mouth putting them at risk. A recent government report states, until new guidelines for conducting exposure studies, are developed, the EPA will not know how much exposure is associated with lawn care pesticides and associated health risks, especially for children.


Pets are also at high risk for contamination. They are exposed to lawn chemicals when walking on recently treated surfaces. Pesticides are transferred to their paws and coat which they lick and digest.

Bed Bugs, Oh no!!!

You went on vacation, your friend spent the night, you picked up a mattress on the side of the road. Now you have bed bugs. No matter how you got them, you need to get rid of them. How do I get rid of them? Who do I call? Who is responsible to pay for all of this? Attempting to treat bed bugs yourself is not a good idea and usually not very effective. They like to hide in places you would not even think they could fit into and they are very difficult to get rid of unless you know their habits Per Massachusetts housing law, In a one unit building, the tenant is responsible for the treatment (but it doesn't hurt to ask the landlord if they will pay). In a duplex, The landlord is responsible for the treatment and can choose to treat him or herself or hire a professional. We suggest that they hire a professional as bed bugs are hard to eliminate on your own. In a building with three or more units, it is the landlord's responsibility to hire a professional. This is a good example of why we should not be using these poisonous bait blox in our industry any longer. What you see here is a bait block laying on the ground next to the "secure" bait station that it should be inside of. These boxes have pins or rods in them which the blocks should be slid over securing the block inside of the station keeping your pets and other non-target wildlife safe from accidental poisoning. This block contains a poison called Brodifacoum, which affects the ability to form clots in the blood, essentially letting the affected animal bleed to death. Vitamin K is the answer to this poisoning but why let your pets go through all of that unnecessary poisoning when they do not have to. The tech who placed this block must not have secures it through the rod provided in the station or it would not have come out as it has. Can You Truly Trust Your Pest Control Company?

Years ago, when I first got into pest control, My company training was as such, for a simple Carpenter Ant job (maybe they are in the kitchen), We would treat the entire house. Not only is that a waste of chemicals and pesticides but, it is bad for us and our environment. What we did for this simple treatment was to put a dust pesticide all around the sill plate of the house, Then spray the foundation and ground with a heavy pesticide. And then, after all of that, we would start on the inside of the home. Applying the dust to each and every wall/floor joint in any crack or crevice we could find. And as if that was not enough, we would go back through the inside of the home spraying another liquid pesticide all along the same path we just put the dust. This is too much for a simple problem in the kitchen area. According to IPM (Integrated Pest Management), we would only treat the area that the Carpenter Ants were being seen, applying all-natural baits or repellents to safely rid your home of the ants. A number of big companies will still insist that more is better. abandoning IPM altogether and/or claiming they are practicing IPM. Be careful and ask plenty of questions before you hire someone to take care of your pest needs. Make sure they have your best interests in mind.
